About Pineapple Acre

Since 1984, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra League has sponsored the Designer House every other year to raise money for the Richmond Symphony.  For each Designer House, the RSOL selects a large host home for the event, and then invites local designers to compete for the opportunity to decorate one of the 20 to 30 spaces inside and outside the home.  The designers transform their spaces, donating their time and materials.

The Designer House month-long event features daily general admission tours, an on-site Café and a Boutique featuring items like clothing, jewelry, accessories, home goods, stationery and crafts.

Special events such as the Preview Gala, Thirsty Thursdays and Special Events are offered and the Designer House outdoor venue is available for rental for private parties.

"Pineapple Acre" is one of Richmond's finest homes, designed by noted architect Courtenay S. Welton in 1929.  This Ginter Park masterpiece is a classic Georgian revival home located on just over an acre of exquisitely landscaped grounds.  The house hosts an entry way with eight and twelve foot windows, a Palladian library window overlooking the garden, and nine foot ceilings.  There are gracious formal rooms on the first floor along with 5 bedrooms and 3.5 baths within the second and third floors.  The formal grounds include a terrace, swimming pool, fountain, and garden paths. See our Photo Gallery here.

Pineapple Acre was the boyhood home of former Third District Congressman David Satterfield, III, whose father David Satterfield, Jr., was Richmond's Commonwealth's Attorney when the house was built in 1929.  The current owners, The Honorable Viola and Dr. Archer Baskerville, have owned the property for over 30 years. In that time, they expanded the formal gardens having Larry D. Maxey, V.S.L.D., of Scottsville design and install the garden, which won first place in the 1990 "Keep Virginia Beautiful" competition for residential properties.

Pineapple Acre is the Richmond Symphony Orchestra League's 17th Designer House since 1984.  Serving Richmond since 1958, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra League is a membership-based, non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating a volunteer base to support the Richmond Symphony through fundraising, education and community involvement.  Proceeds from the Designer House benefit the Richmond Symphony.
